What Is Family Constellations?

An experiential, systemic approach that uncovers hidden dynamics and intergenerational trauma within the family system. Introduced to the West by Bert Hellinger and rooted in the wisdom of the Zulu people of South Africa, it works to resolve deep emotional and relational patterns held within our ancestral lineages by bringing them into view and restoring balance and the flow of love.

Key Aspects of Family Constellations:

  • Systemic Perspective: It views individuals not in isolation but as part of a larger "family soul" or system, where current issues may stem from loyalty to ancestors or inherited burdens.

  • The Workshop Process: A client (seeker) presents an issue and chooses representatives from the group to stand in for family members (living or deceased). The facilitator guides the client to place these representatives in a "constellation" within a space, often referred to as the "knowing field".

  • Representative Perception: Representatives often experience physical sensations, emotions, or urges belonging to the family members they are portraying, providing insight into the hidden dynamics.

  • Resolution & Healing: Through movement, dialogue, and "healing sentences" orchestrated by the facilitator, the constellation aims to reveal a more harmonious order, allowing the client to let go of inherited pain and find resolution.

  • Core Principles: The work is based on principles such as Belonging (everyone has a right to belong), Order (hierarchy within the family), and Balance (between giving and taking), and Fate (The right to ones own destiny).

What It Addresses:

  • Chronic relationship struggles

  • Unexplained anxieties or emotional patterns

  • Family secrets, trauma, or unexpected deaths

  • Physical health issues

  • Difficulties with career or success

While rooted in family systems therapy, it is deeply mystical and incorporates elements of phenomenology and has been associated with concepts in epigenetics and ancestral memory.

“The desire to go home that is a desire to be whole, to know where you are, to be the point of intersection of all the lines drawn through all the stars, to be the constellation-maker and the center of the world, that center called love. To awaken from sleep, to rest from awakening, to tame the animal, to let the soul go wild, to shelter in darkness and blaze with light, to cease to speak and be perfectly understood.”
